![]() I work for the US Forest Service staffing a fire tower in the remote mountains each summer and have to drive on some terrible roads. The 2007 Compass has been an excellent car. I still have it but just bought a newer 2018 model with 27k miles. I have had it 14 years and put 216,481 miles on it. I bought the 2007 Jeep Compass Sport 4x4 5 speed manual brand new. Due to my experience with this Jeep I have completely sworn off of the brand and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy!! I don't honestly think anyone has the time for me to list the number of things that have gone wrong and repairs I've done on this horribly built vehicle! I have another vehicle (Honda) that is 4 years older that I have well over 200k miles on that has given me little to no trouble other then you usual wear and tear repairs. I can't even imagine what this vehicle would have cost me had I taken it in to a shop for all the repairs I've done on it myself. I do most of the repairs myself minus any suspension issues it's had which I paid 5k on just last year having nearly the entire rear end replaced. I was extra aware to get it washed and all the salt cleaned off and this still happened. I've only had this car for 5 short years and in that 5 years I have dumbed nearly 10k into fixing things on this vehicle, most recently the entire subframe rusting through and nearly loosing my drivetrain (which I am not fixing, it's going to the dump and I'll be more then thrilled to see it smashed to bits)! That's even with me being aware of the issue of rusting being I live in Indiana and we get a bit of snow every winter with plenty of salt on the roads. A more fuel-efficient 2.0-liter engine is available for the Patriot, but only on the 4×2 Sport trim.ĮPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/27 (FWD, manual), 21/25 (FWD, automatic)Ģ3/28 (4WD, manual), 21/24 (4WD, automatic) Driving the optional CVT2 takes some getting used to because it doesn’t have the distinct shift points that our ears are conditioned to hearing. With the manual transmission, steep grades may require downshifting to maintain speed. The engine is a little loud at full throttle and, as with any small displacement engine, passing takes planning. The 172-horsepower engine works well in the Compass platform and returns above-average gas mileage. The 2009 Jeep Compass is offered with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a choice of two transmissions a five-speed manual or the optional Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT2) automatic. In terms of resale value, the Compass falls short of the values held by the CR-V and RAV4, but over a five-year period bests the Forester, Tucson and Sportage. ![]() The upper end of the Compass price range is fairly close to the entry level of three established crossovers: Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. The Jeep Patriot has a lower starting price, while the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are two similar crossovers with MSRPs either close to, or just under, those of the Compass. In the ever-expanding compact crossover category, the Compass faces a significant amount of competition, some of it from within its own family. Limited trims push starting prices closer to $23,000 and top out around $30,000 fully loaded. The MSRP for the 2009 Jeep Compass Sport with front-wheel drive starts just under $19,000, while a four-wheel-drive version is about $1,750 more.
